Photography is a passion and captures the way that I see the world…sometimes with a shutter click of realism and other times with a bias towards nostalgia, memory and timelessness. The foundation for all of my images is a vision to connect a viewer with a unique sense of place – whether that “place” is a majestic landscape, run down barn, busy suburban highway or the simplicity of our homes. To me, “place” provides the context for the narrative of our lives…it shapes us emotionally, spiritually and economically.

Melissa Levesque is a Charleston SC photographer specializing in fine art and documentary photography.  Her primary photographic inspiration is the rich history and everyday beauty of the Georgia/South Carolina coast, especially the communities bordering US Highway 17 between Mount Pleasant, SC and Savannah, GA.  This passion is rooted in a personal history that includes 9 generations of family members living in a community along this highway. She consistently chases the artistic standard proffered by Williams Faulkner: “to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again since it is life.” Her photographs connect the viewer to a specific sense of place while provoking feelings of memory, nostalgia, and timelessness.

Ms. Levesque’s images have been featured in The Photo Review, South x Southeast Photo Magazine, One Twenty-Five Magazine, and in the online photography magazine, Don’t Take Pictures. She has been a featured artist in two exhibitions sponsored by The Charleston Center For Photography (Space, 2014 – 3 Images Selected; Tension, May 2015 – 1 Image Selected) and was the solo artist featured in October 2015 at the Saul Alexander Gallery in downtown Charleston, SC (Lowcountry Landscapes: Travels Along Highway 17, 11 Image Portfolio).

Ms. Levesque is a graduate of Queens University of Charlotte (BA, History) and the University of Georgia (Masters in Historic Preservation and Juris Doctorate). A native Savannahian, she resides in Mount Pleasant, SC with her family.
